Joselyn Guadalupe Garcia and Michael Lenetsky, Respected Members of Cornell University, Tragically Pass Away on the Same Day

Cornell University is mourning the tragic loss of two cherished members of its community on Friday. Joselyn Guadalupe Garcia, an 18-year-old first-year student, and Michael Lenetsky, a senior department manager in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, both passed away unexpectedly, leaving the campus in profound sorrow.

Joselyn Garcia was found unresponsive in her residence hall, and while her death has been described as an apparent suicide, the university emphasizes the ongoing mental health challenges faced by many students. A first-generation student who had recently joined the First at Cornell program, Joselyn had dreams of becoming a dentist and had already shown immense dedication toward achieving her goals. Her friends and mentors remember her as compassionate, driven, and full of potential.

Just hours later, Michael Lenetsky, known for his steady guidance and unwavering support, died suddenly following a medical emergency. Having dedicated years of service to the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Michael was highly respected for his professionalism and kindness. Colleagues recall him as a stabilizing presence who was always there to offer support during challenging times.

In response to these devastating losses, Cornell University has increased counseling and support services for both students and staff. The entire Cornell community is grieving together, and heartfelt condolences are being sent to the families of Joselyn and Michael.
